After this beautiful Yao girl had outwitted me into buying a bracelet from her, I asked if I could take her portrait. She said yes a bit self-consciously and looked away from the camera. It was a perfect pose, I snapped the first shot then said "Smile!" and caught the reaction.

Tu Van village, Sa Pa, Viêt Nam.

Is the coiffe there for any religious/modesty reasons, or is it more of a fashion statement?

It's fashion, they're very keen on being beautiful at all times, even while doing house chores. They only wear mainstream clothing when it's really cold because they think they're ugly, hehe.

She is lovely, and so are these two photographs. I love plain 'reaction' photographs- I like taking them, because people don't look so strained =)

Random note--apparently my 2 years of German stayed with me a little more than I thought, because the thought FIRST came into my head as, "No sense in looking schlampig." (Which basically means "sloppy").
