Artist's Comments

[APOLOGIES for the repost! I finally got my mentor to help me finish the sword, so I'm reposting it and submitting the print.]

For the third one on the series (see Zhen Ming [link] and Mei Hua [link]) I bring you Dao Shu, the art of the broad sword. This posture is actually part of the form, as I found out when I started learning it after doing the line art for this. Her outfit shows influences from the Ottoman Empire, Persia, Beduin tribes, Russia, China, Japan, ... Colour scheme taken directly from the Sarawak's native dress.

For those who wonder, her name means Fragrant Snow.

The background paper is the same I used before for the simple reason that I want this consistent look throughout the series. It's also why I didnt' give her a shadow on the ground, as the first 2 don't have one (that and I hate those).
I plan to do one more to complete the series, or 2, depending... See the 5 Chinese elements are associated with the 5 basic weapons, 3 of which I have now treated. The last two are the gun (pronounce "goon", staff, long pole) and the bare hand. So I have to decide if I want to do a 4-Chinese-weapons series or a 5-Chinese-elements series. You've probably guessed by now that the symbol in the background stands for one of the elements: Metal. [Update: 5-series it is, and It Shall Be Knowneth As Wu Xing]

Great stance!

As for the sword, I can sort of see what you mean, so I hope someone here is able to help you. But mind you I still think overall its great so that distracts from any minor flaw… Gawd I hope that made sense? Only just got over a headache….so I think im probably rambling a bit…..

Looks lovely- the colours are so vibrant!
I don't think I could be of much help with the sword, but I personally would take away the semi-transparent highlights, and just leave the strong blacks and whites...it might give more of an impression of shinyness. The reflections themselves look fine to me! =D =D
:iconatake:
How do you make those backgrounds with the paper and stuff?
