Voting time! Plz read!

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 22, 2009, 8:25 PM

Bumping this up for those who weren't able to vote because PatchTogether was down. It's back up now, please try again and spread the word if possible

My designs have been approved! It's voting time! :excited:

Here's how it works:
If the designs get enough vote, they are selected for production in large quantities. This is the best thing that can happen.
If they're not selected, they still have a chance of being produced on a small run, but that means a certain amount of pre-orders are necessary, and the cost is higher. So we really want to get as many votes in as possible to try not to have to go that way.

You need to log in to the site to vote (I know, some people don't like to do that and I understand), and here are direct links to the designs:

-> [link]

Also while you're on the site, it would be really sweet of you to also vote on ^Katmomma's two designs as they mean a lot to her:

-> [link]
- > [link]

If it doesn't work out well oh fine, we'll have tried. But I can't tell you how much I appreciate your support so far!
Needless to say, if any of you decides to uplaod designs, you can count on my help!

Wushu'ed out, hehe

Journal Entry: Mon Sep 7, 2009, 5:56 AM

Sorry I've been so intense on the site lately! But you'll be rid of me for a few days next week :D

I probably won't finish and post this journal till tomorrow, but right now I'm completely and utterly spent, so even though it's only 7:30 pm I'll likely go to bed afterwards. I returned just an hour ago from another Wushu seminar and we've never worked so many hours in a row for an external practice. Something like 4 hours yesterday before dinner, than another half hour; 3 hours this morning before breakfast, 3-4 before lunch, and another half hour after eating and before leaving. Our Jiao Lian (coach) figured out that the best way to make us run was to make it fun, so he came up with a bunch of games involving burst power and we did more of that than I thought I was capable of. For one of them, he went off for a few minutes and hid 2 plastic bottles in the environment – and mind you we were on the flank of a mountain with fog so thick we could only barely make out the "line of trees" a couple hundred meters away that delimited the end of our search area. We were 2 teams, first to bring back a bottle wins and the other gets punished. If nobody brings back a bottle within 90 seconds, we're all punished. I dashed straight to the trees, with an intuition they'd be up in the branches, indeed found a bottle and dashed back like mad – and got *£^%£ lost in the fog! I made it in time though and we won, but I thought I would never be able to breathe again :giggle:
We were in a really gorgeous place, a small hotel up on Mt Sannine which is known for its mineral water. Water was abundant and free as we literally drank out of a spring in the courtyard. The fog was incredible: when we arrived on Saturday afternoon, we could see nothing but white, and it's only in when morning dawned crystal clear (pre-dawned I should say; some of us had a 5 o'clock exam so we had plenty of time to admire the stars before dawn came) that we discovered the mountains looming right above us and the village in the valley below. As we started training again after breakfast, we could see far over the sea the cloud cover that started forming as soon as the sun touched the water; an hour later they were shading us, and another hour later we were surrounded by clouds creeping their way up the mountain slope at the speed of a small bird. Absolutely awesome.

So here I am completely wiped, bruised, footsore and delighted.

Oh and my Ethiopia article is out this month! I went way overboard with 2,600 words and loads of pics but the editor gave me 10 whole pages instead of cutting it :D

ProjectComment

We are a project that features the generally obscured and underappreciated artists and their art in regular news articles. Our objective is to recognise deviants who deserve more recognition and to feature deviations with less than 10 original comments.

We’ve recently come up with a system so that people needing comments can find other people willing to comment on their pieces, and thus, get guaranteed constructive comments in that way.

More information at ~ProjectComment

And now for the Comics and Cartoons Forum!

Now that we have the gallery rolling with contests and regular news features, it's time to give some attention to the Comics and Cartoons forum, and to that effect I made a poll here to gauge the community's interest. As a first step, my intention is to clean it up of threads that shouldn't be there, including self-promotion topics and "what's your favorite Marvel character" threads (more suitable for the Fan Art forum). I think a self-promotion sticky would be a neater way of allowing people to discuss their personal comic projects without flooding the board, and that's part of the second step – getting interesting activity going on there as well as making it easier to find. I know it's pretty much hidden, but we can't do anything about the forums' organization at this point (don't go and think dA doesn't care about that issue, though: fixes and additions are done in a certain order for good reasons).
Using the forum is completely optional of course, but those of you who are interested can greatly help by poking around the forum during the next few days and sending opinions and suggestions for its improvement :)

^Cedarseed on her DD selection

I have come to something of a decision concerning DDs. I have been receiving suggestions, many of which I did feature, for pieces that though awesome, could have been equally posted under Digital Art or Traditional Art. For instance:

These are pieces whose contents we may (or may not) associate with comics and cartoons, but not done in any format that defines this medium.
Yet this can be defined very succinctly:
Comic page or strip= Sequential art
Cartoon= A single frame telling a self-contained story or conveying a commentary on a specific subject – NOT simply a cartoony-looking image or an image of cartoon characters.
Also fitting specifically under Comics would be pieces that make use of symbols (like speedlines), devices (like thought bubbles) or a rendering (certain styles of inking) that are very specific to comics.
There isn't much point curating a Comics and Cartoons gallery if I'm not emphasizing what makes this medium different from general illustration. Therefore, I prefer not to feature such images anymore, at least not in the proportions I have been. I want to bring attention to skills in sequential art and in cartooning, as well as character design and stylization. Also, there are many Marvel and DC professionals posting in this gallery, and though their work about our favorite superheroes is mindblowing, I'm tired of featuring mainstream characters done in mainstream styles, no matter how much I may love these styles myself. Unless they're revisited in a truly novel way (like this watercolor), I'm no longer featuring them.
I hope you understand what I'm trying to do here and that I can count on you to bring fresh new work to my attention :D Of course it's arbitrary, but that's why it's so good to have 2 GMs. ^Thiefoworld has his own personal guidelines and you can read all about them here. As for me, you can get a feel for what strikes my fancy by browsing this collection of DDs I gave.

dA Emoticomic contest (prizes updated)

Journal Entry: Thu Sep 10, 2009, 11:03 AM

What is it about?

dA Emoticomic is a collaboration between the Emoticon and Comics & Cartoons galleries. We're going to make comic strips using emoticons! This is an opportunity for comic artists to play with the tiny sizes of emotes and pixelled backgrounds, and for emoticonists to venture into sequential art. Examples:

The theme

The theme for the contest is: deviantART. This can be anything to do with dA, Fella, parts of the site - use your imagination.

The deadline:

All entries need to be submitted by September 30 at 23:59 PST.

Rules:

:bulletred: The total comic should be between 5 and 12 panels. Layout is free.
:bulletyellow: You must use the "classic" 15x15 round emoticon base.
:bulletgreen: You can use pre-made bases. Some that are free for use can be found here: [link]
:bulletblue: You can animate it (though that won't give you an advantage) but you CAN'T use Flash. If it's animated, it has to be emote-appropriate animation exported as a .gif.
:bulletpurple: You may choose to make a collaboration between two artists, however please understand that if a collab wins, the artists have to decide between themselves how to split the prizes (prizes won't be duplicated.)

Where to submit:

All entries must be entered into Contests > 2009 > dA Emoticomics.
Don't note us with your entries, just place them there and we won't miss them :)

The Prizes:

All entries will be featured, and the best 3 will additionally receive:

:bulletred: 1st Place - $40 deviantdollars + a copy of Scott McCloud's Making Comics donated by ^Cedarseed + a commission by ^Thiefoworld + a month-long Journal feature, an emoticon request and a support stamp from =Seiorai + a sketch by *HA2693 + 1 emote request from =KimRaiFan + a month long page feature from ^Synfull

:bulletgreen: 2nd Place - $25 deviantdollars + a commission by ^Cedarseed + a month-long Journal feature, an emoticon request and a support stamp from =Seiorai + 1 emote request from =KimRaiFan + a month long page feature from ^Synfull

:bulletblue: 3rd Place - $15 deviatdollars + an avatar request by ^CookiemagiK + a month-long Journal feature, an emoticon request and a support stamp from =Seiorai + 1 emote request from =KimRaiFan + a month long page feature from ^Synfull

As usual, additional prize donations are welcome! :D

The Judges:

:iconsynfull: :iconcookiemagik: :iconcedarseed: :iconthiefoworld:
Judging will focus on how good a comic has been made around the emote character, and how well it relates to the theme. Pixelling skills will be taken into account but not be the decisive factor, therefore don't hesitate to enter even if this is your first time pixelling!

Public Service Announcement

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 30, 2009, 9:05 AM

I did want to tell you something about my exciting life in my next journal (), but following a recent incident that I won't go into (not related to me), I feel the need to set a few facts straight very concisely. Most of you have been with me since well before I joined the volunteers team and know I say things as they are, so please heed this:

1. GMs are dARTists before being GMs and they hate art theft just as much as everyones else does.

2. NO GM would feature a deviation they know to be stolen, not under any circumstances.

3. GMs check that the work they feature is original to the extent of their abilities, but nobody has yet come up with a miracle machine that can check a piece against the entirety of the internet (tinyeye only does so much). SHIT WILL HAPPEN. Every volunteer, at least once, is going to feature a piece without having any way of knowing it's a rip. Has anyone here never faved a piece and later found out it was stolen? Honestly?

4. GMs immediately try to rectify the situation if they have the unpleasant surprise of finding out one of their DDs is not original. (Why the hell would they not?) HOWEVER:
a. We need time to verify the info because we can all agree nothing sucks so much as being punished when you ARE the original artist.
b. We can remove a DD as soon as we're sure, but we CANNOT take down a deviation, we have no such privileges – we have to file a report just like everyone else, and then its up to the CEA desk. And if you've read this article (if not, you should), you know that when a deviation is reported by someone other than the artist him/herself, it takes more time. "Speedy justice" is an oxymoron, folks.

If you can't bring yourself to believe the above, nothing we can say is going to make you change your mind, so I'm not going to try, but it's very sad.
But for those of you who get this, when you spot a wrongful DD, please note the concerned GM, preferably with a link to the original work, and let them take it from there – just don't expect the offensive piece to be taken down that very moment.

If you have any uncertainty about how or why we do things, please ask.

In other news I spent my first laid-back weekend in a long time, and also my last... Next weekend is a Wushu seminar during which our TaijiQuan exam will take place, and the weekends after that... well I'll tell you later :D
